RULING ISSUED IN HOUSING AUTHORITY VS. COUNTY BOARD CASE

A ruling was issued last Friday in Bond County Circuit Court in the lawsuit between the Housing Authority and the Bond County Board.  The lawsuit was brought by Billie Joe Allen and Debbie Whicker and the Housing Authority Board arguing their terms to serve on that board are still current.  The county’s position is that both Allen and Whicker’s terms ran out and since neither had been reappointed by the County Board new commissioners could be selected. 

The county filed a motion for involuntary dismissal of the lawsuit arguing the court did not have jurisdiction over the matter.  Judge Jensen denied the motion to dismiss and ordered that Allen’s term will end March 4, 2013 and Whicker’s term will end November 5, 2013. 

Jensen wrote in his conclusion, “For whatever reason the county board chose not to specifically identify the length of Ms. Allen's and Ms. Whicker’s terms when they were originally appointed to the board.  Absent specific limiting language of the appointment, it is reasonable to infer that the county board intended to appoint them for a full term of five years.”

RAIN TOTALS FOR GREENVILLE

We got a wonderful rain Monday.  Here are the rain totals for Greenville as recorded at 6:00 o’clock this morning.  97 hundredths of an inch were measured at the Sewer Plant, 1.01 at the station on Sixth Street, and 57 hundredths at Idler Lane and Rt. 140.  Here at the WGEL studios, we got nine tenths of an inch and Joe Doll said he got one inch at Doll’s Orchard.

GREENVILLE CITY COUNCIL MEETING PREVIEW

The Greenville City Council regular monthly meeting is Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m. at the Greenville Municipal Building.  There will be a public hearing regarding the annual appropriations ordinance.  In addition, the council will address a street overlay proposal for the Greenville square, an IEPA loan and construction engineering agreement for a water main project for Harris Avenue, the extension of utility consultant services and continued discussion on the amendment of the Liquor Control Ordinance and video gaming, both carried over from last month’s meeting.

MULBERRY GROVE AMERICAN LEGION FLAG DAY CELEBRATION

The Mulberry Grove American Legion Post 1180 will celebrate Flag Day, Thursday, June 14, with the raising of flags on the Avenue of Flags around the Mulberry Grove Cemetery.  If weather permits, the flags will fly from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.  Following the lowering of the flags, members of the post will conduct a flag burning ceremony to properly dispose of worn out American flags.  You are invited to bring unserviceable flags to the cemetery or drop them off at the Mulberry Grove Community Building any day before 11:00 a.m.  You are also invited to assist with the disposal ceremony.

LINCOLN LAND LEATHERNECKS PRESENT TWO MEMORIAL GRANTS

The Lincoln Land Leathernecks Detachment 1174 of the Marine Corps League created the Lincoln Land Leathernecks Memorial Grant in honor of departed members.  Two area seniors were selected to receive a one-time $500.00 grant to assist with their college expenses.  Grants were presented to Angel McDonald of Ramsey and Harley Tompkins of Smithboro.  The detachment wishes Miss McDonald and Miss Tompkins the best in their educational pursuits.
