SMITHBORO FIREFIGHTERS EXTINGUISH TWO FIRES IN ROYAL LAKE

Smithboro Firefighters responded Monday, at 2:38 p.m., to a report of a grass fire along Rt. 40 near Royal Lake.  According to Fire Chief Dale Deverick, the owner was allegedly burning some rubbish and the heat from the fire ignited dry grass.  The grass fire quickly spread out of control.  An old shed which had been demolished was burned but no other property was damaged.

While still on the scene, firefighters noticed another fire on Texas Avenue, also in Royal Lake.  Fire Chief Dale Deverick went to the home and informed the owners of the ban on burning in Bond County.  Firefighters extinguished the trash fire before it could spread.  No injuries were reported from these fires and firefighters were on the scene about two and a half to three hours.
