AREA FIRE FIGHTERS CONTROLLED BURN IN SMITHBORO
A lot of memories for folks in Bond County and especially Smithboro went up in flames Saturday afternoon as the former Tevis market building was put to the torch for training for area firefighters. Among other duties firefighters were busy watering down neighboring buildings including the post office next door to the controlled burn Saturday afternoon.

DEADLINE FOR FLOOD DEBASEMENT QUICKLY APPROACHING
According to Bond County Supervisor of Assessments Deb Langham, the deadline to turn in your flood debasement supporting loss documentation is Friday, December 14, to be included in the 2012 assessment year, payable in 2013. Information submitted after December 14 will be applied to the 2013 assessment year, payable in 2014.
SEVERAL STUDENTS NAMED ILLINOIS STATE SCHOLARS
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission recently recognized the 2012-13 Illinois State Scholars. Several students made the list from Bond County Unit #2. We spoke with Greenville High School Principal, Wendy Porter.
Porter congratulated the following students for their outstanding academic achievements: Ryan Alderman, Ava Bergen, Joanna Boyd, Anna Brannon, Madison Calvin, Amy Disch, Jordan Disch, Katie Filby, Hayden File, Allison Krieg, Trey Kuhl, Kelsey Laurent, Moriah Goggin, Seth Lohman, Corey Manning, Blake Moss, Layla Zahniser, and Tyler Ziemba. Approximately the top ten percent of graduates are announced as State Scholars each year.
RAIN EACH DAY THIS WEEKEND
Rain fell each day this weekend. Accumulated rain totals in the Greenville area from Friday evening to Monday morning were, at the sewer plant .63 at 6th Street .57 and at Idler Lane .52. No rain is in the forecast for Monday or Tuesday but rain could return to our area later in the week.
MULBERRY GROVE CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
Mulberry Grove Elementary School will present a Christmas program, “A Portrait of Christmas ”, on Monday, December 10th. We spoke with Music Director, Jessica Boese about the event.
This year’s program is called “A Portrait of Christmas.” It celebrates many of the traditions of the Holiday Season. Grades K-6 will be performing. Jessica said that the program will likely last half an hour, and will include songs like The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Silver Bells, Going on a Sleigh Ride, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. She added that they have transformed the stage into a Winter Wonderland, with many trees and lights. The show will take place Monday, December 10th at 6:30 pm in the high school gym. ANNA OESTREICH ON FOOD PANTRY DURING THE HOLIDAYS
The Holidays are here, and that can mean an increased demand on local food pantries. We spoke with Anna Oestreich about some of the things that they currently need in Bond County.
Anna began by telling WGEL that they appreciate all of the support from the community. All donations are appreciated, big and small. Anna said that this time of year, they find themselves in particular need of fruit and fruit juices. Also, during Christmas break, many kids are left home alone while their parents are still at work. Food which is easy for children to prepare is also needed. In addition to donating food and other supplies, folks can also make monetary donations to the food pantry. KASKASKIA COLLEGE JUMP START PROGRAM EXPANDS
The Kaskaskia College Jump Start Program for high school students has been expanded to spring, summer, and fall semesters beginning spring 2013. The Jump Start Program allows high school students to receive a 50% reduction in tuition for up to four credit hours. Registration for spring semester is going on now and students may get an application from their school guidance office or by calling 545-3048.
