MORE SNOW ON THE WAY NEW YEARS EVE

According to information from the National Weather Service, we have a good chance for more snow throughout the day today, tonight, and into Tuesday morning. There is a winter weather advisory in effect from noon today through 6:00 a.m. Tuesday. Snow is expected today, maybe mixed with rain, and changing over to all snow after 5:00 p.m. today. Look for a possible 1-2 inches additional accumulation before the system moves out of the area Tuesday.

SECRETARY OF STATE OFFICES CLOSED NEW YEAR’S DAY

According to Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, all driver services facilities offices will be closed Tuesday, January 1 for New Year’s Day.  All facilities will re-open for regular business Wednesday, January 2. You may visit the Secretary of State website, www.cyberdriveillinois.com, to change an address, register to become organ and tissue donor, or renew license plate stickers by mail.

ROADSIDE SAFETY CHECK RESULTS

District 11 Illinois State Police Troopers conducted a roadside safety check Friday, December 21 and Saturday, December 22, on the IL Rt. 15 eastbound ramp to IL Rt. 157.  There were 48 citations or arrests and ten written warnings.  Eleven were for driver’s license offenses, nine for occupant restraint offenses and nine for other alcohol or drug arrests.

NEW MOBILE PHONE AND TEXTING LAWS

Laws signed by Governor Quinn in July will become effective January 1. Senate Bill 2888, also known as Julie’s Law, prohibits courts from granting supervision to any defendant charged with operating a vehicle at a speed greater than 30 mph over the posted speed limit or in excess of 25 mph in an urban district.  Senate Bill 2488 prohibits the use of cell phones in all roadway work zones.  House Bill 5099 prohibits use of mobile phones when driving within 500 feet of an emergency scene, and House Bill 5101 prohibits a commercial motor vehicle operator from using a hand-held mobile phone or engaging in texting while driving.

SORENTO BAPTIST CHURCH NIGHT WATCH

Sorento Baptist Church is having a Night Watch Service, with music by local musicians, New Year’s Eve, from 7:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m.  Everyone is invited.  The Sorento Baptist Church is located at 206 W Taylor Street, in Sorento.

PARTY HOSTING TIPS TO AVOID FOOD POISONING

If you host a New Year’s Eve party, there are ways to help avoid food-borne illnesses.  Wash your hands with soap and warm water for twenty seconds before and after preparing food.  Wash all utensils, dishes, and countertops with soap and hot water and rinse fresh produce.  Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw meat and poultry, and their juices, separate from fruits, vegetables, and cooked foods.  Do not use the same utensils on uncooked and cooked foods, before washing utensils.  Always use a food thermometer when cooking meat and poultry to be sure it is cooked to a safe internal temperature and be sure to refrigerate leftovers within two hours.

Anne Timmermann

Anne Timmermann, age 87, of Breese, passed away Sunday, December 30, at Country Side Manor in Aviston.  A Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Breese.  Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Highland.  Friends may call Wednesday, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. at the Moss Funeral Home in Breese.  Memorials are suggested to Mater Dei High School, All Saints academy, St. Augustine Church, or Heartland Hospice. 

Christine Johnson

Christine Johnson, age 80, of Coffeen, passed away Saturday, December 29, at Montgomery Nursing & Rehab Center in Taylor Springs.  Graveside funeral services will be Wednesday, at 2:00 p.m., at Crossroads Cemetery in Camden, Tennessee.  Friends may call Tuesday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Toberman-Dean Funeral Home in Coffeen.

Helen M. Huene

Helen M. Huene, age 99, of Litchfield, formerly of Bartelso and Highland, passed away Wednesday, December 26, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield.  A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Bartelso.  Burial will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery.  Friends may call Thursday, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Friday, from noon – 1:30 p.m. at the Moss Funeral Home in Germantown.  Memorials are suggested to St. Cecilia Church.

Jean N. Reelitz

Jean N. Reelitz, age 94, of Greenville, passed away Friday, December 28, at Helia Healthcare.  Memorial services will be Friday, at 10:00 a.m., at the Reno Bethel Church.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.  Friends may call Thursday, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home in Greenville.  Memorials are suggested to the Reno Bethel Church or the Reno Bethel Cemetery.

Leroy S. Zobrist, age 83, of Highland, passed away Thursday, December 27 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.  A funeral mass will be Monday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Highland. Friends may call Sunday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Monday, from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul Educational Foundation, the American Heart Association, and Faith Countryside Homes.

Rose F. Schumacher

Rose F. Schumacher, age 89, of Aviston, passed away Thursday, December 27 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.  A memorial Mass will be Monday, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston.  Friends may call Sunday, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.  Memorials are suggested to the School Sisters of Notre Dame or to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Lights of Scholarships.  The Moss Funeral Home in Breese is in charge of the arrangements.
