GREENVILLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FACES AND PLACES 2013

The Greenville Chamber of Commerce will showcase new businesses during their annual “New Faces and Places” breakfast.  Chamber Director John Goldsmith said the program is Wednesday, February 6, at 7:30 a.m., at the St. Lawrence Church Hall.  This year they will be adding an annual meeting component.  They will open with a brief overview of 2012 activities and preview some 2013 events.  All chamber members are encouraged to attend and to participate, new "faces or places" please call the chamber office at 664-9272.


GREENVILLE COLLEGE FACTORY THEATRE PRESENTS THE SPITFIRE GRILL

The Greenville College Factory Theatre on Harris Avenue is producing a musical, The Spitfire Grill, February 6-9, at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $4.00 for Wednesday and Thursday, and $7.00 for Friday and Saturday performances.  You may purchase tickets at Watson’s Drug Store and Jo’s Java.  For more information, call 664-6552.

KASKASKIA COLLEGE NAMED TREE CAMPUS FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR

The Arbor Day Foundation named Kaskaskia College a Tree Campus USA for the third consecutive year.  Tree Campus USA recognizes colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and engaging staff and students in conservation goals.  Kaskaskia College maintains a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures toward trees, an Arbor Day observance, and student service-learning projects.  For information about the college’s Arboretum, call 545-3069.


IDES TO SHUT DOWN CENTRALIA EMPLOYMENT OFFICE

The Illinois Department of Employment Security recently announced they will close seven offices and reduce their staff by 192 positions.  The IDES cited mounting federal budget restrictions and funding reductions as the cause for the decision.  The Centralia office is one of the locations scheduled to be closed.  Offices were evaluated on several criteria, including work-load comparisons and lease considerations.  Closings are expected in mid-March.  For more information, visit the IDES website at www.ides.illinois.gov

CONGRESSMAN JOHN SHIMKUS TO CO-CHAIR COAL CAUCUS

Illinois Representatives John Shimkus and Bill Enyart will co-chair the Congressional Coal Caucus to promote Southern Illinois coal and good jobs.  They will work together to advance Southern Illinois coal production, promote workers, and secure good jobs that strengthen our middle class.  Shimkus said, “Coal helps keep our electric utility cost down as well as providing jobs to thousands of Illinoisans.  We need to work to increase employment and use of coal by advancing rules and regulations that do not unnecessarily shut down mines and power plants.”

MIDWINTER BALD EAGLE SURVEY AT CARLYLE LAKE

January 11, Carlyle Lake staff members participated in the Illinois Department of Natural Resources “Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey” at Carlyle Lake.  Twenty-eight mature and nineteen immature eagles were identified in three counties.  Carlyle Lake offers excellent habitat for eagles.  The number of eagles visiting the lake has increased and many active nests have been located.  For more information on where to view eagles, call 594-2484.
