SORENTO MAN KILLED ON LACLEDES LANDING

28 year-old Kyle Roberts of Sorento was killed on Lacledes Landing at 1:50 a.m. Sunday, according to St. Louis Police.  Roberts and an unknown suspect were in a verbal confrontation when the suspect allegedly stabbed Roberts once in the neck, according to police.  Roberts was taken to St. Louis University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The suspect fled the scene and is described as a light complexioned black male in his early 20's. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimes Stoppers at 866-371- TIPS. Callers may be eligible for a cash reward.  The investigation continues. 


SCHAUFELBERGER TAKES 2ND PLACE AT STATE

Greenville High School Sophomore Will Schaufelberger earned 2nd place in the IHSA 2A Three-Point Showdown after making 8 three-pointers out of 15 shots Friday night at the Carver Arena in Peoria. Four players advanced to the final round of the contest. Senior Dayton Ince of Kewanee made 11 three pointers to finish in 1st place. The other two players made seven baskets each. Congratulations to Will Schaufelberger on his 2nd Place finish in the IHSA 2A Three-Point Showdown!

HEAD-ON COLLISION IN GODFREY KILLS TWO

Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Friday, March 8, to the scene of a double fatality traffic accident on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Godfrey.  The Sheriff’s Office began receiving 911 accident report calls at 1:41 p.m. Two vehicles reportedly collided head-on in the southbound lane of Martin Luther King Boulevard, just south of Godfrey Road. 

James C. Gregory, age 50, of Alton, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado truck southbound and according to police was not wearing a seatbelt.  Gregory’s truck was struck head-on by a Toyota Avalon, driven by 81 year-old Margaret E. Tracy, of Godfrey.  A witness at the scene reported for unknown reasons, Tracy’s vehicle veered into the southbound lane and struck Gregory’s truck.  Godfrey Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to aid with emergency medical care. 

At approximately 2:50 p.m., emergency medical personnel determined both drivers were deceased.  Routine toxicology tests will be performed on Gregory and Tracy.  The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.

WEEKEND RAIN IN GREENVILLE

The area got some rain this weekend. Officially in Greenville, eight hundredths of an inch were recorded Saturday at the Sewer Plant, 17 hundredths at the station on Sixth Street, and 15 hundredths at Idler Lane and Rt. 140. We got a nice rain Sunday. Sunday totals showed 52 hundredths at the Sewer Plant, and 51 hundredths at Sixth Street and also at Idler Lane and Rt. 140.

SHIMKUS SCHEDULES OFFICE HOURS IN VANDALIA

Congressman John Shimkus will meet with constituents Monday, March 11, from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m., in the Oval Office in the Fayette County Courthouse in Vandalia.  Shimkus explained, “These are one-on-one meetings to give individuals privacy and allow them to speak honestly and openly about their concerns.”  Appointments are not necessary but are helpful in keeping wait times to a minimum.  To schedule an appointment or if you need special accommodations call 217-347-7947.

KASKASKIA WATERSHED ASSOCIATION ANNUAL SUMMIT

The Kaskaskia Watershed Association Annual Summit is Monday, March 11, from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at the Mariner’s Village Convention Center in Carlyle.  The theme is “Protecting Our Valuable Resources,” focusing on protecting the lands and waters of the Kaskaskia Watershed.  The registration fee is $20.00.  Pre-registration is required by calling Roberta at 566-4451.

2013 POLAR PLUNGE RAISES OVER $80,000

The tenth annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Illinois was a huge success.  Special Olympics Area 12 Director Peggy Knebel said it was very chilly this year with the water temperature at 31.5 degrees.  There were more than 730 participants.  At the last count, they had received more than $80,000.00 in donations and money is still coming in.  For more information, or to make a donation to the Special Olympics, call 654-6680.

Ruby E. Essenpreis

Ruby E. Essenpreis, age 90, of Highland, passed away Thursday, March 7, at Tri Star Southern Hills Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.  Funeral services will be Monday, at 11:30 a.m., at the Meridith Funeral Home in Highland.  Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery.  Friends may call Monday, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House of Nashville, Tennessee, or to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in St. Louis.

Betty Overbaugh

Betty Overbaugh, age 71, of Hillsboro, passed away Thursday, March 7.  A memorial service will be Friday, March 15, at 11:00 a.m., at the Perfetti Funeral Home in Panama.  Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Sorento.  Friends may call Friday one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Chloe Little, age 94, of Carlyle, passed away Saturday, March 9, at Carlyle Healthcare Center.  Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m., at the Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle.  Burial will be in McKendree Chapel Cemetery west of Keyesport.  Friends may call Tuesday, from noon until service time at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice.
