LOCAL NRA MAKES LARGE DONATION TO MULBERRY GROVE TRAP SHOOTING TEAM

At their 17th annual banquet Saturday night the Shoal Creek Friends of NRA made a large donation to the Mulberry Grove Aces Trap Team. The Shoal Creek Friends of NRA raised $23,000 including a record turn out of 250 people at the banquet. Over $4,000 was donated to the trap team at Unit 1 High School.

HATS OFF FOR HANNAH’S PLAYGROUND

The Hannah’s Playground committee is working to build an inclusive playground for children and adults of all ability levels in Breese. Deb Berndsen said “Hats Off for Hannah’s Playground” is Saturday, March 23, at the Breese American Legion.  The evening includes silent and oral auctions, all-you-can-eat chicken dinner, a DJ, and more.  Tickets are $10.00 for a single and $15.00 for couples and may be purchased in advance or at the door.  For more information or to order tickets, call Deb at 791-5396.


SENATOR MCCARTER OFFERS VIRTUAL OFFICE HOURS IN CARLYLE AND VANDALIA

Senator McCarter’s virtual office hours are designed to improve communication with constituents, providing one-on-one opportunities to discuss issues.  Virtual office hours in Carlyle are the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., at the Carlyle City Hall.  Virtual office hours are also available in Vandalia, the 2nd and 4th Thursdays, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., at the Senator’s Office.

GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM PREPARING FOR 2013 SEASON

Spring is just around the corner and many spring sports teams are gearing up for a new season.  Greenville High School Girls Softball Coach Doug Fletcher said his team is relatively young this year.  Five all-conference players are returning and they have two seniors and five juniors. Underclassmen will need to step up quickly to help round out the team.  The first half of their season should be very challenging. They will play Wood River and then defending State Champs Nashville.  Their first game is Tuesday, March 12.


GREENVILLE BASKETBALL PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL CONFERENCE TEAMS

Three Greenville High School Lady Comets and Comets basketball players were named to the South Central Conference All-Conference Teams.  Lady Comets players Kassidy Alderman and Maria Reinhard, both juniors, and Comets player Austin Lawrence, a sophomore, received this recognition.

BEGINNING QUILTING CLASS OFFERED AT GREENVILLE EDUCATION CENTER

The Kaskaskia College Continuing Community Education Department is offering a “Beginning Quilting” course at the Greenville Education Center.  The class is Tuesdays, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., March 19-April 2.   The cost for students under age 60 is $45.00. Students age 60 and older may register at no cost.  A portable sewing machine is required.  For more information or to register, call the Greenville Education Center at 664-9394.


TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR COMETS GAME AT BUSCH STADIUM

For the second consecutive year, the Greenville Comets Baseball team will be playing at Busch Stadium.  Greenville High School Athletic Director Joe Alstat said tickets are available for the Comets game against Edwardsville at Busch Stadium, Saturday, April 13.  The Cardinals will play the Milwaukee Brewers at 3:15 p.m. with the Comets game to follow.   Tickets are being sold at approximately $20.00 below face-value.  Tickets for the 200 level are $35.00 and tickets for the 100 level are $45.00. They are available at the high school or by calling the Athletic Office at 664-5580.



OBITUARIES

Danyelle R. Heinz

Danyelle R. Heinz, age 38, of Highland, passed away Sunday, March 10, at her residence. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m., at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, from 8:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Siteman Cancer Center or the Highland Animal Shelter.
