TODD EATON NAMED TO ALL-MVC SECOND TEAM

Greenville native Todd Eaton was recently named to the 2013 All-Missouri Valley Conference second team.  Eaton, a junior relief pitcher at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is tied for the conference lead with nine saves in 2013.  He is tied for fourth in the Valley with 25 relief appearances.  He recorded a 3.18 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 28 and a third innings this season.  This is Eaton’s second consecutive All-Missouri Valley Conference Team selection.  Eaton is the son of Jane and Mike Eaton.


SHIMKUS ANNOUNCES POCAHONTAS FIRE GRANT

Congressman John Shimkus announced funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program for the Pocahontas-Old Ripley Fire Protection District.  The district will received $16,625.00 in Operations and Safety funds which may be used for firefighter training, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighter wellness and fitness, and modification to fire stations and facilities.


ILLINOIS LEGISLATORS APPROVE NATURAL GAS MODERNIZATION PLAN

The Illinois State Senate recently approved legislation accelerating modernization of the state’s natural gas infrastructure and creating 150 new jobs in Central and Southern Illinois.  Under the new bill, Ameren Illinois will invest an additional $330 million over ten years to strengthen the integrity, safety, and reliability of the natural gas delivery system.  Richard Mark, CEO and President of Ameren Illinois, said, “This plan enhances our ability to meet the current and future needs of our gas customers while creating 150 good-paying jobs and maintaining strong consumer protections.  It is a win for Illinois customers, businesses and labor – especially here in Central and Southern Illinois.”  The plan now goes to the Governor’s desk for approval.

GREENVILLE MUNICIPAL BAND TO PLAY AT ICE CREAM SOCIAL 

The Greenville Municipal Band will perform at the Kiwanis Ice Cream Social Thursday, June 6, at 7:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church.  In case of inclement weather, the concert will be inside.


UNIT #2 SCHOOL BOARD RETREAT

There will be a Unit #2 School Board Retreat Thursday, June 6, at 6:00 p.m.  According to Superintendent Jeff Strieker, the purpose of the meeting is to plan for the 2013-2014 school year.  Strieker told WGEL they are hopeful the state will pass a balanced budget soon so they can discuss how to move forward for FY14.  The next regular school board meeting will be Monday, June 17, at the Central Office on North Hena Street in Greenville.


STATE-WIDE VETERANS SERVICE OFFICES CLOSED FOR ANNUAL TRAINING

All Illinois Veterans Service Offices will be closed for annual training and certification now through Friday, June 7.  Veterans wishing to contact a VSO during this period may call 1-800-437-9824.

Richard E. Powell

Richard E. Powell, age 83, of Greenville, passed away Tuesday, June 4, at his home.  Funeral services will be Friday, at 11:00 a.m. at Young Funeral Home.  Friends may call Thursday, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to The Greenville First Christian Church.

Janet K. Schrage

Janet K. Schrage, age 66, of Highland, passed away Tuesday, June 4, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.
