Lorraine Johnson, age 95, of Carlyle, passed away Sunday at Carlyle Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Carlyle. Burial will be in Carlyle Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, from 8:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church. Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Johnson was born on April 23, 1918, in rural Carlyle, a daughter of Henry and Ella (Frey) Mahlandt. She married Darrell Hope Johnson on May 29, 1937, in Waterloo, Illinois and he preceded her in death on December 28, 1980.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her children – Nancy Purcell and husband Don of Carlyle; Hope Johnson and wife Margaret of Carlyle; Merrill Johnson and wife Carol of St. Louis; Van Johnson and wife Brenda of Carlyle and Jaye Coers and husband John of O’Fallon, Illinois. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents – Henry and Ella Mahlandt; her husband – Darrell H. Johnson; her siblings – Maymie Chandler and husband Ed, Clifford Mahlandt and wife Lexie, Elmer Mahlandt and wife Gladys, Roy Mahlandt, and Mabel VanDorn and husband Ed.
Lorraine was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carlyle and had worked at Brown Shoe Company in Trenton. She was an avid reader and baseball fan and enjoyed playing cards.
Paul E. Schmitt
Paul E. Schmitt, age 77, of Highland, passed away Saturday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland. Funeral services will be Thursday, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, also in Highland. Friends may call Wednesday, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m., at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Highland EMT’s, or in the form of Masses.
He was born on Saturday, June 06, 1936, in Highland, IL, the son of Edward J. and Anna M. (nee Reidelberger) Schmitt.
On Saturday, October 10, 1959, he married Barbara A. Schmitt (nee Frey) who passed away March 31, 2009.
He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL; former Teamster Local 525 (25 years) - Alton, IL; Knights of Columbus #1580 (since 1958) - Highland, IL; Highland Precinct Committeman 1992-1998; former Highland Jaycees; Highland Zoning Board (1999); former Volunteer Highland Fireman.
Born at Highland; grew up in Grantfork; graduated from St. Paul High School in 1954; served in the US Navy from 1956-1958. He was stationed in San Diego, CA and was an aircraft mechanic. He operated the Grantfork Bowl from July of 1958 to 1968, owned Doug's Shoe Store form 1968-1969 and owned Dog and Suds at Highland from 1969-1971. From 1971 to 1977 traveled for Dog and Suds, Inc. throughout the south and midwest. He started working for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation in 1977 and retired in 1999. He then volunteered at the Highland Fire Depatment from 1979-1997, was the treasurer of the department in 1988 and 1989, and president in 1992. He also worked with the Highland EMS Department in 1990-1997, and was awarded the E.M.T. of the Year award in 1993. He retired in 1998 from the EMS & Fire Department. Mr. Schmitt was a Past Precinct Committeeman (1992-1998); was a member of the Highland Zoning Board in 1999. He never missed his grandchildrens sporting events. He enjoyed bus tours, Tuesday afternoon gatherings with friends, and was very faithful to Perpetual Adoration Prayers every Wednesday from 10:00 - 11:00 at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland, IL.
