A house fire covered much of the area around Harris Avenue and 4th Street in Greenville in smoke Thursday morning.
Greenville firefighters were paged to a house fire on the corner of 1st and Spring Streets next to the old Bond County Health Department building, just after 7 AM.
Fire Chief Denny Wise told WGEL someone started a load of laundry and left the home. The fire is believed to have started in that area and quickly spread to a nearby staircase that led to the second floor.
Smithboro, Pocahontas-Old Ripley, Mulberry Grove, Shoal Creek, Highland, and Highland-Pierron fire crews provided mutual aid. Personnel were on the scene for nearly five hours.
No one was injured in the fire or subsequent efforts to battle the blaze.
Wise said the fire marshal has been called in to investigate.
The home was a total loss.
