The season is continuing for the Greenville Comets baseball team after a regional victory at home Monday over Vandalia.
The Comets scored seven runs in the 5th inning then held on for an 8 to 6 win. They now play Mater Dei at Vandalia in the Class 2A Regional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Brock Nelson pitched in relief and earned the win. Blake Doll got the save.
The Vandals led 2-0 after one inning, 3 to 1 after three and 4-1 after the fourth inning.
The Comets erupted for 7 runs in the fifth to take the lead.
Mason Johnson delivered a three-run double to tie the score then Jonathan Barnes doubled to put Greenville in front 5 to 4. Two batters later, Trent Hlafka belted a three-run homer over the left field fence to make it 8 to 4.
Vandalia came up with two runs in the sixth and had the tying run on base when the final out of the inning was recorded. The Vandals also had two runners on base in the seven before Doll got the next two batters to pop up to secure the Comets victory.
Greenville is now 14-17 and 1 for the season.
The winner of Wednesday’s Greenville-Mater Dei game moves into the regional championship game at noon Saturday.
